statistisch gesehen wird etwa eines von 3.000 Kindern mit einem nicht eindeutigen Geschlecht geboren. In jeder Gesellschaft leben also viele Intersexuelle, Hermaphroditen oder Zwitter, wie sie auch genannt werden. In der Annahme, das Geschlecht eindeutig festlegen zu müssen, werden immer noch viele dieser Kinder operiert.

Durch eine sogenannte "geschlechtsangleichende& quot; Operation und anschließende Hormonbehandlungen sollen sie eindeutig einem Geschlecht zugewiesen werden.
Welche Leiden das verursachen kann, zeigt sich an der Lebensgeschichte von Christiane Völling. Ihr ganzes Leben lang wurde sie in die Geschlechterrolle eines Mannes gezwängt, in die sie nicht gehörte. In dem als "Zwitterprozess" bekanntgewordenen Gerichtsverfahren klagte sie erfolgreich gegen einen Chirurgen, der sie ohne ihr Wissen sterilisierte.
Dieser Prozess hat zur Aufklärung und einem entscheidenden Umdenken beigetragen. Mittlerweile gibt es Eltern, die sich vorläufig gegen eine Operation entscheiden und ihr Kind solange wie möglich lassen wollen, wie es ist: männlich, weiblich oder eben dazwischen.
Dörthe Eickelberg und Pierre Girard sprechen heute mit einer Intersexuellen und mit einem ehemaligen Kinderarzt über das tabuisierte dritte Geschlecht. Aber wie entsteht eigentlich Geschlecht? Und wie entwickelt sich eine Geschlechtsidentität?
