Der Autor Philipp Meinert stellt sein im August 2018 erschienenes Buch "HOMOPUNK History" vor:
"Der urbane Sumpf, aus dem Punk hervorkroch, war alles andere als heterosexuell und männlich geprägt. Dort tummelten sich die New Yorker Prä-Punks von The Velvet Underground um den bisexuellen Lou Reed oder die mit Geschlechterrollen spielenden New York Dolls. Und auch als Punk Ende der Siebziger explodierte, war er geprägt von der gemeinsamen Vergangenheit mit der schwul-lesbischen Kultur. Die Schlüsselfiguren der späteren Londoner Punkszene trafen sich bevorzugt in Homo-Bars, die bürgerlichen Vorstellungen von »Männlichkeit« und sexueller Identität wurden zusammen mit der Musikgeschichte entsorgt.
Aber schnell wurden Punk und sein Subgenre Hardcore immer brutaler, lauter und männlicher. Viele Schwule, Lesben und Queers kehrten der Szene den Rücken oder verblieben ungeoutet im Schrank, bis mit Bruce LaBruce und G.B. Jones zwei Punks in Toronto Mitte der 1980er die Queercore-Bewegung ins Leben riefen.
