„Das Zeitalter der Dunkelheit: Nach 100 kosmologischen Dekaden sind alle Protonen längst zerfallen und alle Schwarzen Löcher verdunstet. Geblieben sind nur noch Abfallprodukte der Prozesse: Photonen von kolossaler Wellenlänge, Neutrinos, Elektronen und Positronen. Es besteht eine seltene Parallele zwischen dem Zeitalter der Dunkelheit und der Urmaterie, in dem das Universum weniger als eine Millionen Jahre alt war. In beiden dieser zeitlich so weit getrennten Epochen gibt es keinerlei sternähnliche Objekte, die Energie erzeugen können.
In dieser kalten und fernen Zukunft hat die Aktivität im Universum drastisch abgenommen. Die Energieniveaus sind niedrig, und die Zeitspannen sind unvorstellbar groß. Gelegentlich begegnen durch den Raum treibende Elektronen und Positronen einander und bilden Positroniumatome. Diese späten Gebilde sind jedoch instabil, denn ihre Bestandteile müssen sich schließlich vernichten. Auch andere energiearme Vernichtungsprozesse können sich, wenn auch nur sehr langsam, abspielen.
Verglichen mit seiner ausschweifenden Vergangenheit ist die Lebensweise des Universums jetzt relativ zurückhaltend und bescheiden. Oder doch nicht? Die scheinbare Armut dieser fernen Epoche könnte auch ein Ergebnis unserer ungenauen Extrapolation sein und nicht wirklich ein Zeichen von Alterschwäche.“
