Während die eine Hälfte der Welt Homosexuellen immer mehr Gleichberechtigung zugesteht, tendiert die andere Hälfte dazu, sie immer schärfer zu attackieren und zu kriminalisieren. In Ländern wie Frankreich, Deutschland oder den USA scheinen queere Lebensentwürfe fast schon zum Mainstream zu gehören. Dennoch gibt es selbst in Deutschland und Frankreich nach wie vor Ausgrenzung und Intoleranz. In 72 Ländern rund um den Globus ist Homosexualität nach wie vor strafbar und in zehn Ländern wird die Todesstrafe verhängt.

In Moskau begegnen die Filmemacher den Regisseuren Askold Kurow und Pawel Loparew, die in ihrem Dokumentarfilm „Children 404“ zeigen, welche Auswirkungen Putins sogenanntes Homo-Propaganda-Gesetz auf Kinder und Jugendliche hat, die sich selbst als homo- oder transsexuell empfinden. Hamed Sinno ist der offen homosexuelle Frontsänger der libanesischen Popband Mashrou’ Leila, die für viele als die Band des Arabischen Frühlings gilt. In Südafrika treffen die Filmemacher auf die international gefeierte Tänzerin Mamela Nyamza. Zusammen mit der Theatermacherin Mojisola Adebayo erzählt sie die Geschichten lesbischer Frauen, die in Südafrika unter dem brutalen Akt des sogenannten Corrective Rape, der "korrigierenden Vergewaltigung“, leiden.

Benyamin Reich, Sohn eines ultraorthodoxen Rabbiners aus Jerusalem, führt mit seinen eindringlichen Bildern einen intensiven Dialog über männliche Schönheit und Religion. Abdellah Taia, marokkanisch-französischer Schriftsteller und Spielfilmregisseur, erzählt, was es heißt, als schwuler Marokkaner im Pariser Exil zu leben.

Ihre Reise führt die beiden Filmregisseure schließlich auch zu dem erfolgreichen Drehbuchautor und LGBT-Aktivisten Dustin Lance Black nach Los Angeles. Black ist in einer mormonischen Familie, auf einem Militärstützpunkt in Texas groß geworden und kämpft heute vehement für die Homo-Ehe in allen Bundesstaaten der USA. Für sein Drehbuch zum Film „Milk“ mit Sean Penn in der Hauptrolle erhielt er den Oscar.
