Was ein Surfer zu seinem Glück braucht, ist eine Welle und ein Brett. Das Meer kennt keine Grenzen. Doch die Freiheit zwischen Wellen und Wolken versandet an Land. In vielen Kulturen ist Surfen ein reiner Männersport - Frauen im Wasser, das ziemt sich nicht. Wenn Frauen sich dem widersetzen, werden sie verlacht oder verstoßen. Doch es gibt einige, die trotzdem surfen und es werden immer mehr. Dörthe Eickelberg - Moderatorin und begeisterte Surferin lernt Frauen kennen, die in ihrem Land die Welle machen. Denn Surfen ist mehr als ein Sport: Es ist eine Bewegung. Ein emotionaler und humorvoller Trip durch vier Kontinente - zu mutigen Frauen, die auffallen, weil sie sich nicht in traditionelle Rollenbilder pressen lassen. –

Sabah Abu Ghanem ist die einzige Frau in Gaza, die surft. Denn in ihrer Kultur sind Surferinnen eine Provokation. Bald könnte sie ihre letzte Welle reiten, denn sie soll heiraten. Dann entscheidet ihr Mann über sie. Dörthe Eickelberg taucht mit Sabah ein in ihr Leben mitten im Ramadan und hofft bis zuletzt, noch einmal mit ihr gemeinsam surfen zu gehen. In Südafrika trifft Dörthe Eickelberg die einzige schwarze Surferin am Strand von Durban: Suthu Makiwane. Auch sie sorgt für Irritationen: Surfen gilt immer noch als "Weißen-Sport" und das Wasser hat eine tiefe religiöse Bedeutung für viele Afrikaner. Doch Suthu muss sich gegen noch stärkere Vorurteile und Widerstände durchsetzen: Sie liebt eine Frau. Und damit lebt sie in Südafrika gefährlich.
