vier Lesben von heute berichten aus ihrem Alltag. Daneben stellt Praunheim Archivmaterial mit Porträts dreier schwuler Männer, die während der Nazi-Ära und der Nachkriegszeit noch die ganze Härte staatlicher Repression erlebten.

"Tote Schwule, lebende Lesben" enwirft mit sieben kurzen Porträts die Vision einer von Frauen dominierten Subkultur. Damit erzählt Rosa erstmals eine von seiner eigenen Person losgelöste Geschichte der Homosexualität und ihrer Unterdrückung, die er neu gewichtet: Laut Praunheim setzten sich die lesbischen Frauen an die Spitze der so genannten Queer-Bewegung.

Die Protagonistinnen des Films umspannen zwei Generationen und stehen für Gegenwart und Zukunft der Homosexuellen in der Gesellschaft: die in Berlin lebende Türkin DJ Ipec, die sich souverän in der Clubszene bewegt, Manuela Kai, die das Lesbenmagazin L-Mag herausgibt, oder Laura und Silke Radosh, die mit ihrem Baby eine lesbische Krabbelgruppe besuchen. Auch die Schauspielerin und Kabarettistin Maren Kroymann zählt dazu.

Die drei männlichen Protagonisten dagegen gehören alle zu der Generation, die das "Dritte Reich" und Deutschland am repressivsten Punkt der Geschichte erlebten.
