Er hat acht Kinder in die Welt gesetzt und alles getan, um sie wieder abflatschen zu sehen. Meine älteste Schwester ist allen seinen furchtbaren Bemühungen zum Trotze am Leben geblieben, aber für immer entstellt. Sie ist nach den Vereinigten Staaten gegangen, wie in ein tausend Meilen entferntes versteck, für immer verstört, das Nasenbein schlecht verheilt, das er ihr mit unmenschenlichen Schlägen zertrümmert hatte, als sie noch nicht drei Jahre alt war. Ich bin ein Franzose geworden, der Drittgeborene wurde ein verstockter, blasser Streber und Angeber, die kleinste Schwester zu einem verschüchterten Wesen. Den jüngsten Bruder habe ich nicht mehr aufwachsen sehen, zwei Geschwister sind in der Wiege gestorben - hat er dazu geholfen? - und Maja hat sich beharrlich geweigert, mit ihm zu leben. Sie hat aufgehört zu leben - ihr geduldiges, stummes Nein war nicht, was man Sterben nennt.
Ich wußte nicht, woraus mir allein unter allen Kindern die Kraft erwuchs, dem Alten in einem jahrelangen Kampf zu widerstehen und damit seine zerstörende Gewalt auf mich allein zu lenken. Zu jener Zeit lag alles in einem Nebel des Entsetzens...

Ich spürte, daß der mörderische Haß des Alten durch meinen Widerstand verursacht war, aber ich konnte mich nicht unterwerfen, denn es ging um mehr als um mein Leben.
