Gleich zu Beginn seines Kurses über Autokratie sieht sich der lockere und für seine progressiven Ansichten geschätzte Lehrer Rainer Wenger mit der Meinung seiner Schüler konfrontiert, ein faschistisches System habe in der heutigen Zeit ohnehin keine Chance mehr. Um die Schüler vom Gegenteil zu überzeugen, startet Wenger ein mehrtägiges Experiment: "Die Welle" - mit durchschlagendem Erfolg. Doch dann läuft die Aktion aus dem Ruder ...
Kritik
Die Buchvorlage zum Film, der Roman "Die Welle" von Morton Rhue, der 1981 erschien, zählt mittlerweile zu den Schullektüreklassikern in Deutschland. Der wiederum bezog seine Geschichte auf das tatsächlich im Jahre 1967 in Kaliforniern durchgeführte Experiment "The Third Wave". Initiator war der Geschichtslehrer Ron Jones an der Cubberley High School in Palo Alto, einer kleinen Stadt circa 50 Kilometer südlich von San Francisco."
