Der BdWi
Am Anfang stand der Aufbruch der linken Intelligenz, Studierender wie beruflich an den Hochschulen Tätiger, ProfessorInnen wie wissenschaftlicher MitarbeiterInnen. 1968 schlossen sich etwa 300 an Universitäten arbeitende WissenschaftlerInnen und andere UniversitätsabsolventInnen zusammen, um politisch unmittelbarer als die damals eher berufspolitisch agierende GEW für die Demokratisierung wissenschaftlicher Inhalte und Arbeitsformen einzutreten.
Zu den GründerInnen gehörten Intellektuelle wie Wolfgang Abendroth und Werner Hofmann - Marburger Koryphäen kritischer Politikwissenschaft bzw. Ökonomie, die, wie etwa Abendroth, schon gegen das NS-Regime und in dumpfen Adenauerzeiten in der Tradition der linken Arbeiterbewegung um Terraingewinne für gesellschaftlichen Fortschritt gekämpft hatten. Zusammen mit der damaligen jungen Generation der Studierendenbewegung kritisierten sie die geschichtlich rückwärts gerichteten Formierungstendenzen in Wissenschaft, Bildung und Gesellschaft.
Die Wende brachte einen Schub neuer Mitglieder in den BdWi: hoch qualifizierte WissenschaftlerInnen aus der DDR, die ebenso abgewickelt wurden wie ein großer Teil der Wissenschafts- und Forschungspraxis.
1989 öffnete sich der Verband auch der Mitgliedschaft von Studierenden. Fachhochschulen waren anfangs nicht im Blick des Verbandes; FH-Studierende und beruflich dort Tätige schließen sich seit Anfang der Neunziger Jahre in steigendem Maß dem BdWi an.
Mittlerweile findet sich ein großer Teil der damaligen kritischen Hochschulintelligenz in den unterschiedlichsten fachlichen Tätigkeiten auch außerhalb der Hochschulen - der BdWi ist in die Poren der Gesellschaft eingesickert. Mit den Studierendenbewegungen seit den späten 1990er Jahren hat sich der studentische Anteil unter den BdWi-Mitgliedern stark erhöht.
Seit 1974 ist der BdWi eingetragener Verein. Seine "Denkfabrik", die Forschungs- und Informationsstelle (FIB) beim BdWi, ist e.V. seit 1989.
