Ava Johnson hat alles, was sie sich wünschen kann: Sie ist eine gefragte Hair-Stylistin in Atlanta und die Männer der schwarzen Bourgeoisie liegen ihr zu Füßen. Ihr Leben nimmt eine plötzliche Wendung, als sie erfährt, daß sie HIV-positiv ist. Mit dem Geld aus dem Verkauf ihres Salons in der Tasche macht sich Ava auf den Weg nach San Francisco, wo sie hofft, als HIV-Infizierte weniger Aufsehen zu erregen. Ein Zwischenstop bei ihrer Schwester Joyce hat verblüffende Folgen: In Idlewild, dem ehemaligen afroamerikanischen Ferienparadies am Michigansee kann Ava sich auf ganz unerwartete Weise entfalten. Sie merkt nur langsam, daß sie ein neues Leben begonnen hat und sich ganz nebenbei auch noch verliebt hat ....

Eine durch und durch straighte Geschichte - und WUNDERBAR! Die Autorin versteht es, ernste und sehr ernste Themen in diesem Roman zu ballen, ohne daß es moralisch/deprimierend/frustri erend wirkt. Ein wirklich gelungener Roman!
