Was Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927) zu sagen hatte und wie sie es sagte, war spektakulär. Die Frau mit dem scharfen Verstand und der magischen Ausstrahlung, die keinen Skandal scheute und selbst im New Yorker Rotlichtmilieu eine schillernde Figur abgab, vereinbarte mehr als einen Gegensatz in sich: Aufgewachsen in bitterster Armut, wurde sie über Nacht durch Börsenspekulationen reich. Sie war Intellektuelle und Spiritistin, Frauenrechtlerin und Prostituierte, die erste Brokerin an der Wall Street und ein unorthodoxe Sozialistin. 1872 kandidierte sie als erste Frau für das Amt des amerikanischen Präsidenten - knapp fünfzig Jahre vor Einführung des Frauenwahlrechts! Die Woodhull sprach unbekümmert über Sexualität, propagierte freie Liebe, schrieb in ihrer eigenen Wochenzeitung über Börsenkurse und Verhütungsmethoden. Was war von so einer Frau zu halten? Nichts, entschied Harriet Becher-Stowe , die Autorin von "Onkel Toms Hütte". Der tugendhafte Beecher-Klan zählte zu Woodhulls Erzfeinden. Doch auch der amerikanischen Frauen- und Reformbewegung erschien sie bald ebenso visionär wie untragbar: Der Name Victoria Woodhull verschwand aus den Annalen ....

Diese Frau war keine Lesbe, das Buch wird hier aber trotzdem aufgenommen, weil sie so eine starke, außergewöhnliche Frau ist, daß es sich einfach lohnt, das Buch zu lesen. Die Frau hatte echt Visionen - und Biss! Und das Buch ist auch richtig gut geschrieben.
