Lebenskünstlerin Natalja, Tochter eines russischen Grafen und einer deutschen Freidenkerin, ist fassungslos, als sie einer Einladung ins Haus ihrer verheirateten Jugendfreundin nach Bristol folgt. Die Familie, in der sie landet, erweist sich als erzkonservativ. Marie Luises Gatte ist nicht nur dominant, er besitzt zudem eine Plantage auf Jamaica, die er mit Sklaven betreibt. Seine Ehefrau scheint zwar nicht glücklich, genießt aber doch auch ihre Privilegien: In ihrem Haus hält sie selbst Leibeigene.

Beurteilung von Miriam
Ein ungewöhnlicher Aufhänger für eine interessante Geschichte. Gut recherchiert, interessant umgesetzt - doch leider ist bei mir der "Funke" der Geschichte erst ziemlich spät übergesprungen. Irgendwie habe ich das ganze erst lange ziemlich distanziert gelesen, bevor ich in die Geschichte reingezogen wurde.
Das ist seit Jahren mein Lieblingsbuch.
