Mila ist sechsundzwanzig und eigentlich Lehrerin. Doch dann begeht ihre Freundin Polly einen Mord für sie und die beiden flüchten vor der Polizei. Auf ihrer Odyssee geraten Mila und Polly immer wieder an gefährliche Menschen und in lebensbedrohliche Situationen, der Tod scheint sie zu verfolgen. Mit dem wenigen Geld, das Mila mit schlecht bezahlter Schwarzarbeit verdient, halten sie sich über Wasser. Sie leben in Abrisshäusern und brechen oft über Nacht alle Zelte ab, nur um in einer neuen Stadt wieder auf Pollys Fahndungsfotos zu stoßen. Das einzig sichere Versteck und mögliche Endstation ihrer Flucht scheint ein leerstehendes Haus in Schweden zu sein, von dem nur sie beide wissen. Doch nicht allein das Sterben umgibt die Freundinnen wie eine Aura. Etwas Ungreifbares, Rätselhaftes schwebt über den doch so unterschiedlichen Frauen: Ist wirklich allein ihre Freundschaft der Grund für den Zusammenhalt? Der Blick zurück in die gemeinsame Kindheit lüftet ein dunkles Geheimnis, das Mila und Polly untrennbar, auf beinahe obsessive Art, miteinander verbindet.
