Dieser Roman beruht auf einer wahren Geschichte: Eine junge Frau aus dem Senegal flieht aus ihrer Heimat, weil ihre Liebe zu einer anderen Frau nicht geduldet wird und sie mit einem Mann zwangsverheiratet werden soll. Sie flieht nach Deutschland, wo sie Schutz und Hilfe erhofft und um Asyl bittet. Sie gerät in die Mühlen des Asylverfahrens: Anhörung, Unterbringung in einer heruntergekommenen Sammelunterkunft, Residenzpflicht, schlechte Lebensbedingungen aufgrund des Asylbewerberleistungsgesetzes. Sie lernt andere Flüchtlingsschicksale kennen und durchlebt alle Facetten menschlicher Gefühle in einer Welt, die ihr zugleich Freiheit verspricht und Ausgrenzung vorlebt. Als sie schließlich abgeschoben werden soll, muss sie eine ganz eigene Entscheidung treffen.
