Luce und Mead sind Schwestern, hhaben einander jedoch völlig aus den Augen verloren. Luce steht vor ihrem künstlerischen Durchbruch als Malerin, doch ihr beruflicher Erfolg wird vom Verlust ihrer Lebensgefährtin Grace überschattet. Mead ist Ärztin und renommierte Aids-Forscherin, die eine Zeitlang in Nairobi lebt und dort einer alten Liebe wiederbegegnet. Als der Vater der beiden Schwestern einen Schlaganfall erleidet, machen sich Luce und Mead auf die Reise zu ihrer Mutter, zueinander, zu neuen Glücksmöglichkeiten. Luces Bilderzyklus "Auf der Suche nach Grace", in dem sie den Tod der Geliebten verarbeitet, ist am Ende des Romans abgeschlossen, und ihr neuestes Werk trägt den Titel "Mead gefunden/Afrika".
