Die lesbische Lokalpolitikerin Sidney Garrett zieht als Kandidatin der Demokratischen Partei gegen den korrupten republikanischen Bürgermeister von New Brunswick in den Wahlkampf. Sidney deckt die Machenschaften der gegnerischen Partei und deren Verstrickungen in Bestechungsskandale auf. Joan Stanford, verwöhnte Tochter eines konservativen Bankers, beschließt, Sidneys Wahlkampfkampagne zu unterstützen. Mit zunehmender Überzeugung engagiert sie sich für Sidneys mutigen Kampf. Gemeinsam entwirren die beiden Frauen den Parteifilz und ziehen gegen Spekulanten, Stadtplaner und korrupte Politiker zu Felde, die skrupellos ihre Interessen durchzusetzen versuchen. Bals merkt Joan zu ihrem Erstaunen, daß sie auch von Sidney selbst fasziniert ist. Die Wahl rückt näher, und die Dinge nehmen eine dramatische Wendung
