Die Studentin Lazi liebt Frauen. Das ist unerhört im Taiwan der 1980er-Jahre: Eine queere Szene erwacht, und das an der Elite-Uni in Taipeh! Nun, wo das Kriegsrecht aufgehoben ist, bricht die Jugend auf. Aber wie geht Freiheit? Lazis Liebe zu der älteren Shui Ling wird zur Obsession. Als Grenzen überschritten sind, flüchtet sich Lazi in eine Clique schillernder Außenseiter, doch auch die kämpfen mit sich und dem Leben. Und dann ist da noch ein Krokodil, das sich als Mensch tarnt. Dieser leidenschaftliche, mit literarischen Formen wie Tagebuchnotizen, Aphorismen, allegorischen Einschüben sowie (Genre-)Grenzen spielende Roman ist voller Scharfsinn und skurrilem Witz, erzählt aber auch ganz offen vom Schmerz ihrer Zeit. Qiu Miaojin (1969-1995) studierte in Taipeh, später in Paris Psychologie und Gender Studies, schrieb und filmte. Nachdem sie für ihre Kunst und ihre Sexualität Selbstmord beging und für die Hoffnung und die Liebe lebte, avancierte sie durch ihren posthum veröffentlichten Roman zur LGBTQ-Ikone. Inzwischen wird sie als eine große chinesischsprachige Autorin und visionäre Schriftstellerin der Moderne wiederentdeckt: • Die Los Angeles Review of Books verglich sie mit James Joyce, • die New York Times nannte die ›Aufzeichnungen eines Krokodils‹ ein »spannendes transgressives Meisterwerk«. • Qui Miaojin erhielt mehrere Literaturpreise.
